RNA Council

Currently, twenty Councillors constitute the RNA Council and guide every aspect of the RNA’s operation and development. An executive team of seven Councillors, including the RNA President, has the responsibility of ensuring the ongoing viability of the Association and RNA Showgrounds.

The RNA Council represents more than 5,000 RNA Members from throughout Queensland and Australia; and meet on a monthly basis.

All Councillors act in an honorary capacity and are assisted by Council Stewards, who similarly receive no remuneration for their work. The members of the RNA Council provide a range of expertise to the Association, with diverse backgrounds in the rural, private and public sectors.

Members of the RNA Council also sit on various committees which meet on a regular basis to assist with the direction and administration of Royal Queensland Show competitions and Ekka exhibits.

President

A respected Queensland grazier, Allan Warby, Principal of Billinbah Pastoral Company, has dedicated his professional career to the development of our state’s cattle industry.

He has been an RNA Councillor since 1972, was appointed Junior Vice-President in 2000 and Senior Vice-President in October 2003. He is Chairman of the Beef Cattle; Joint Stock; and Meat Hall Committees and a Member of Development; Entries; Animal Boulevard; and QCAS National Finals Committees. His commitment to the Show is evident in the growth of the Royal Queensland Show cattle competition to become Australia’s largest.

 

 

 

 David Thomas

Solicitor and immediate past President of the Brisbane Development Association, David Thomas joined the RNA Council in 2002 and was elected to the position of Junior Vice-President in 2006.

He is a partner with Brisbane law firm Minter Ellison. He chairs the RNA’s Development; Planning; and Woodchop Committees and is a Member of the Entries; Appeals and Disciplinary; Space and Letting; and Veterinary Committees.

 

 

 

 Dan O'Connor

Junior Vice-President

Dan O’Connor is a Barrister-at-Law and Chief Executive of the Bar Association of Queensland. He has been an RNA Councillor since 2000 and was appointed Honorary Treasurer in 2006.

He is actively involved in the RNA and oversees many aspects of Show planning including: Chairman of Budget; Space and Letting; Entertainment, Marketing and Sponsorship; and Appeals and Disciplinary Committees; Member Development; and a member of Horse and Arena; Joint Stock, Animal Boulevard; and Woodchop Committees. He is a Ring Councillor and co-convenor of the RNA Future Directions Committee. Mr O’Connor is involved in a number of charitable organisations, in particular he is Chairman of the Residential Committee of the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, is a Trustee of the Edinburgh Declaration Trust and is a member of the Council of the Anglican Church Grammar School.

 

 

 

 Catherine Sinclaire

Management consultant Catherine Sinclair brings with her extensive professional experience in corporate sector strategic planning, systems and human resource development. She has specific experience as a Board Director in Transport and the Arts and as a Tribunal Member in the Primary Industry Sector. Current positions include Director, Southern Regional Water Pipeline; Director, Queensland Bulk Water Authority; Deputy Chair, Port of Brisbane Corporation; Director, Frontline Defence Services; and Director of The Consultancy Bureau Pty Ltd.

A veterinarian and grazier by profession, Philip Harpham has been a RNA Councillor since 2001 and Chairs the Veterinary; and Young Judges Committees.

He is also a Member of the Beef Cattle; Budget; Development and Planning; Joint Stock; Meat Hall; and Food and Wine.

 

 

 

 Jan McMilan

A Thoroughbred breeder, national and international horse judge, owner of racehorses and many show horses, Jan McMillan has brought considerable expertise to the RNA Council since her election in 1997.

In 2007, Jan became the first female ringmaster in the history of the RNA. Jan also chairs the Horse and Arena, and Quilts Across Queensland Committees and is a member of the Entertainment, Marketing and Sponsorship; Food and Wine; Joint Stock; and Veterinary Committees. She is also proprietor of the Australian Show Horse Hall of Fame. Jan is a member of the Queensland Racehorse Owners Association, Sunshine Coast Turf Club, Brisbane Racing Club, Polo Club, Deputy Chairman of the Licenses Assistance Association and is a committee member of the Gympie Turf Club.

 

 

 

 Angus Adnam

Livestock exporter, Director of Australian Livestock Exporters Council, and Managing Director of AAA Livestock Services Pty Ltd, Angus Adnam has brought a wealth of experience and energy to the RNA Council since his appointment in November 2005.

A RNA Steward and Honorary Council Steward since 1978, his Council responsibilities include participation as Member on the Beef Cattle; Joint Stock; and Chairman of Food and Wine; and House and Catering Committees.

A grazier and RNA Stud Cattle Exhibitor from Yarrawonga-Waco Santa Gertrudis Stud, Alastair Bassingthwaighte has served on the RNA Council since 1981.

He is an active Member of the Beef Cattle; Joint Stock; and Meat Hall Committees.

 

 

 

 Lionel Blumel

Lionel Blumel has been involved with the RNA as a Steward since 1986 and was elected to the RNA Council in November 2006. Lionel is Chairman of the Canine Committee and in 2009 managed the newly established Feline section of competitions.

Lionel works with other members of the RNA Council as a Member of the Animal Boulevard, Joint Stock and Veterinary committees. Lionel is also a Councillor of Canine Control Council (Queensland) and serves on a number of committees. He is a working member of the Samford Show Society and past President of the National Dalmatian Council of Australia.

Tony Carew is a Business Consultant. He was elected to the RNA Council in February 2004, where he is a Ring Councillor and Member of Catering

A RNA Councillor since 2004, retired grazier Ross Douglas is Chairman of the Animal Nursery and Horse Breeds Expo; and Animal Boulevard

Tim Fairfax joined the RNA Council in 2004 and is Chairman of the Flower and Garden and Pisciculture Committees.

A grazier and philanthropist, Mr Fairfax is Chairman of the National Portrait Gallery, Trustee of the Queensland Art Gallery, President of the Queensland Art Gallery Foundation, Chairman of the Salvation Army Brisbane Advisory Board, Chairman of the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation, Chairman of the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, Director of the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and Councillor of Philanthropy Australia.

 

 

 

 Ian Ferguson

Ian Ferguson is a longstanding member of the RNA, who has previously served as Honorary Ring Steward and Honorary Council Steward. He has assisted in running the night program and stewarding with the horse section judges at the RNA for a number of years. A Councillor since early 2007, he currently serves on the Entertainment, Marketing and Sponsorship; and Horse and Arena Committees.

Outside of the RNA, Ian Ferguson is an Inspector of Police attached to the Ethical Standards Command in Brisbane’s CBD.

 

 

 

 Michael Grieve

Michael Grieve was elected to the RNA Council in September 2006.

An education professional and Thoroughbred breeder, roles outside the RNA include Executive Member of the Queensland Racehorse Owners Association and Executive Member of the Ipswich Show Society.

 

 

 

 Susan Hennessey

Susan Hennessey brings to the RNA Council considerable expertise in the area of fine arts. A retired interior designer and past RNA Exhibitor and Steward, she was elected to Council in 2001 and was appointed to the Executive Committee in 2006.

Mrs Hennessey chairs the Fine Arts Committee, incorporating fine art, craft, cookery and photography, is a Member of the Budget; House and Catering; and Entertainment, Marketing and Sponsorship Committees.

 

 

 

 Councillor Peter Kenny

Peter Kenny was appointed to the RNA Council in December 2008 and is a Member of the Dairy Committee. Mr Kenny is the immediate past President of
AgForce. He is a keen advocate for adopting a big picture approach to agripolitics and has driven projects such as the Every Family Needs a Farmer campaign and the Blueprint for the Bush.

Mr Kenny is a member of the Cape York Heritage Committee, represents Queensland agriculture on the Premier’s advisory council on Climate Change and is chair of the expert panel looking at the Social Impact of Drought in Australia for the Federal Government. He is a Director on the Board of QR Limited and Chair of Primary Industries Week Inc.

 

 

 

 Peter Little

Peter Little was elected to the RNA Council in March 2009. Professor Little is Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business Queensland University of Technology and Adjunct Professor, Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade. He holds a Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws from the University of Queensland and PhD from Bond University Law School.

He is a Barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland (admitted in 1976); Fellow, Australian Institute of Management; Fellow, CPA Australia; and Fellow, Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences. Peter is a Director of Ormiston College; and special counsel to McCullough Lawyers Brisbane.

 

 

 

 Bill Ryan

Councillor

Dr Bill Ryan is an orthopaedic spinal surgeon and has served as a RNA Councillor since 2000.

He is Chairman of Poultry; and Wine and Brandy Committees and a member of House and Catering; Food and Wine; Joint Stock; and Animal Boulevard Committees. Bill has championed the development, growth and continued success of the Taste of Queensland Kitchen in the Woolworths Fresh Food Pavilion, which showcases Queensland produce featuring food and wine. Prior to joining the RNA Council, Bill was an Honorary Council Steward for the Royal Queensland Wine Show.

 

 

 

 Joan Scott

As an active member of the RNA Council since 1996, Joan Scott has also served on the Bungil Shire Council and Rural Lands Protection Board and co-authored In Champagne Country and Fight for a Just Cause.

She chairs the RNA Fleece Committee and is a Member of Catering and House; Animal Health; Joint Stock; Meat Hall; Animal Boulevard; and QCAS National Finals Committees.

 

 

 

 Harold Thompson

Harold Thompson is a farmer and Director of the Illawarra Cattle Society of Australia and Australian Red Dairy Breed Inc (Life Member).

He joined the RNA Council in 2000 and is currently a Member of the Entries; Dairy Cattle, Goat, Pig and Deer; Dairy Produce; and Joint Stock Committees. A life member of the RNA since he was 18 years of age, he is a champion of the dairy cattle industry and the families and people who work within it. His family commitment spans more than 80 years of exhibiting and association with the RNA (four generations being Life Members).
